MPLAB IDE
MPLAB ICE 2000 USB Converter Device Driver
First Time Installation

For Windows 2000 and XP

To use MPLAB ICE 2000 with USB communications, the following steps MUST be taken in order to properly install the device drivers.

USB Preliminaries

MPLAB ICE 2000 USB Converter should NOT be plugged into a USB port or the emulator pod at this time.

  • If you have already plugged the converter into the USB port and the "Found New Hardware Wizard" has popped up, click Cancel on that dialog, unplug the converter and continue with these instructions.
  • If you have already plugged the converter  into the USB port and used the  "Found New Hardware Wizard" to install drivers automatically, you have installed the wrong drivers. Follow the instructions specified in C:\Program Files\Microchip\MPLAB IDE\ICE 2000\Drivers\USB\clnice2k.htm.

Note: You must have purchased the Microchip MPLAB ICE 2000 USB Converter (ACICE0108) to use USB with the MPLAB ICE 2000 emulator.  (There is no built-in USB capability on the emulator.) The converter is not a standard USB-to-parallel converter, but one specifically designed for the emulator.

Software Preliminaries

Install the latest version of MPLAB IDE. You can get a free copy of this application from our website (http://www.microchip.com) or from your local Microchip sales office on CD-ROM.

During the install, dialogs may pop up stating, "The software you are installing for this hardware: Microchip Development Tool has not passed Windows Logo testing..." In this case, Microchip Development Tool will be "Microchip MPLAB ICE 2000 USB Converter".

If this happens, click "Continue Anyway" each time.

STEP 1

Connect one end of the USB cable to the converter and the other end to the PC. Do not connect the converter to the MPLAB ICE 2000 at this time.

If you are using an external USB HUB, make sure it has a power supply and is powered or this procedure will not work.

STEP 2 - Windows XP SP2

If you have service pack 2, the first time a new USB device is plugged into a Windows XP system, this dialog box will appear indicating that the system has found a new hardware device and asking you whether or not to search for update software. Select "No, not this time".  Click "Next" and continue with the steps below.

STEP 3

The first time a new USB device is plugged in, a small dialog box will appear indicating that the system has found a new hardware device. There also may be a dialog box that informs the user that a device data base is being built or updated.

After these dialogs appear, the Found New Hardware Wizard dialog box  is displayed. Select "Install the software automatically (Recommended)" and click "Next" to continue the installation.

Note: If you are running Windows 2000, you may not see this or the next dialog. Instead, the system will automatically install the software without asking you. This is OK. Proceed to Step 5.

STEP 4

During the install, a dialog may pop up stating, "The software you are installing for this hardware: Microchip Development Tool has not passed Windows Logo testing..." In this case, Microchip Development Tool will be "Microchip MPLAB ICE 2000 USB Converter". Click "Continue Anyway". (See "Software Preliminaries" for a picture of this dialog.)

The "Completing the Found New Hardware Wizard" will appear once the Microchip MPLAB ICE 2000 USB Converter has been installed. Click "Finish" to end USB installation.

STEP 5

Verify that the driver installed by viewing the Device Manager*, Microchip Tools section.

*To open the Device Manager window, click Start>Settings>Control Panel. In Contorl Panel, double click System. In System Properties, Hardware tab, click Device Manager.

STEP 6
